Thirty years ago, the John Innes Society became increasingly concerned that the Brocklesby Arts and Crafts Bandstand in the John Innes Park was falling into disrepair due to lack of use.   Under the leadership of Committee member Jill Hutchins, sadly no longer with us, Music in the Park’s inaugural concert was held on a beautiful warm June evening, with music provided by five dinner jacketed senior students from a London Music College. It was billed as Merton’s Park’s answer to Glyndebourne. 

 

The three aims, which have held fast over the years since 1989, are to preserve the beautiful bandstand and its setting in heart of the Park, to encourage emerging talent by providing a performance opportunity and to put on alive music event which everyone, of all ages, can enjoy.

 

As with all outdoor events, Music in the Park has had to brave the British weather,  but it has never been rained off, even if some evenings were a tad chilly and once or twice, the audience got just a little bit wet.  The timing has been brought forward as that tends to be warmer and less bothered by midges.  The concert is now held on a Sunday afternoon which has proved to be extremely popular with record audiences of about 150 who enjoy their picnics while listening to a wide range of popular music.

The musicians vary from Quarters and Quintets to full Brass Bands. The audiences have  included Birthday parties and several large family groups, some going on to a BBQ at home afterwards.
