William Morris and the Arts and Crafts Movement and the Architecture Thereof

The speaker, Mrs. Margaret Smart is a member of both the Wimbledon and Victorian Societies. She will show examples of some of the many buildings of this period in Merton Park.

With William Morris having his famous workshops in the Merton Abbey area we are fortunate to have a rich heritage associated with him and his contemporaries. The buildings are no longer there but once housed tapestry and carpet weavers, stained glass workers, and textile printers and dyers. Collections of artifacts are on display at Merton Priory, mostly printed information on Morris in the Heritage and Local Studies centre in Morden library, and the Wandle Industrial Museum has books, information files and an actual model of the works.

There will be a small entrance charge for this talk and tea or coffee will be available.
